About this deal

Video focus pulls are snappy and confident with no sound, drama, or pulsing. There’s a bit more focus breathing on the 24mm than the 20mm, but it wasn’t excessive. While capturing video the two new lenses will also be compatible with AF assist on Sony FE – though that’s on compatible cameras that have this function (my a7IV does, fortunately). It’s an interesting feature that allows you to manually focus during video capture on a certain object or subject, but the lens will continue to autofocus on that object even after you stop doing the manual adjustment. This is a unique way to set focus on something and then allow autofocus to do the heavy lifting after that. A 24mm f/1.4 lens has long been an important model within a lens lineup, and the Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN Art Lens is the first to fill that slot in Sigma's mirrorless DN series. Axial CA remains somewhat persistent when stopping down, with the color misalignment effect increasing with defocusing. As usual for Sigma Art lenses and priced considerably lower than Sony's similarly specced lens, the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Lens is a strong value.

Thus, it was interesting to put the substantially less expensive Sigma lens up against the best available option. This focal length is optimal for nightscapes, and especially with the ultra-wide aperture, this lens is a good choice for such. Minimising vignetting along with the improved efficiency at large apertures secures fantastic brightness and high contrast visible in the images produced by the Sigma 24mm f1.4 DG HSM. This includes indoor photography, astronomical photography as well as blue sky photography. Corresponding AF MountsThe Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN Art Lens is a good choice for those looking for the 24mm angle of view and an ultra-wide aperture at a reasonable price. Aside from a slightly more complicated design, I find inadvertent aperture changes the primary disadvantage of an aperture ring (especially when photographing in the dark). My coverage of image quality falls into two categories: 1) Resolution, where I cover sharpness and contrast and 2) Rendering, which looks at the global look of images in areas like color rendition, bokeh, flare resistance, chromatic aberration, etc… I would recommend that you watch the following video episode where I interactively breakdown the optical performance of the 24 ART in detail:

The spherical aberration color halo shows little size change as the lens is defocused, and stopping down one to two stops generally removes this aberration. The dust- and splash-resistant structure* of the lens itself and the water- and oil-repellent coating of the front element will keep the lens safe and functioning even during shoots in harsher environments. Thoughtful Features Samples taken from the outer extreme of the image circle, full-frame corners, can be counted on to show a lens's weakest performance. Expanded Sigma 24mm f1.4 DG HSM Art Lens - Sony E Fit Key Features: Highest Optical Performance in its Class Thanks to Gentec (Sigma’s Canadian Distributor) for sending me a pre-release review loaner of this lens. As always, this is a completely independent review. *The tests and most of the photos that I share as a part of my review cycle have been done with the Sony a7IV along with the Sony Alpha 1 which will serve as my benchmark camera for the foreseeable future ( my review here ). Sigma 24DN ART Build and HandlingThose photographing moving subjects, such as at sports events or under the night sky where light levels are so low that the earth's rotation becomes a source of camera motion, will appreciate this lens's capabilities.
