About this deal

Renamed the categories to reflect how people are looking for 5k monitors, with the Apple Studio Display being renamed to 'Best 5k Monitor' and the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 to 'Best 5k Super Ultrawide Monitor'.

Changed my Windows Desktop resolution to 2560x1440. Result: This makes MSFS look correct at 2560x1440 AND all other apps look correct as well, but it limits the resolution for my entire system instead of just MSFS 2020.I must admit, I've been a bit cool on HDR monitors recently, mostly because they're usually an absolute pain in the ass to get working correctly. The CRG9, on the other hand, is probably the first monitor I've tested in ages that's just sort of... worked. And it's a revelation! Assassin's Creed Odyssey looked beautiful in HDR, with white hot sun rises piercing my vision with their 1000cd/m2 brightness levels and its autumnal setting bursting with life thanks to the monitor's superb colour accuracy and rich colour palette. Final Fantasy XV impressed as well, with its blisteringly bright and vibrant Lestalum nightlife coming to full and fantastic life onscreen, all without having to tweak a single setting. While there are some ultrawide monitors in the mid-range price category, like the LG 34GP83A-B, most of them don't offer any performance advantages over the models you can get in the lower mid-range price category, like the Dell S3422DWG, which is very good overall and performs well for different uses. It has a 34-inch screen, so it offers less space than the LG 40WP95C-W, but it's still big enough to open windows side-by-side, and it has an 1800R curve that helps bring the edges of the screen closer to you.

Instead, you're probably going to have to resort to third party software such as MaxTo or GridMove to really maximise the amount of space you have at speed. Otherwise, you're probably going to resign yourself to doing a lot more dragging and maximising by hand to get everything just the way you want it. The best 5k monitor we've tested is the LG 40WP95C-W. It has a 5120x2160 resolution, which is otherwise known as 5k2k, and it has the same vertical resolution as a 4k monitor but has more horizontal pixels due to its wider 21:9 aspect ratio. This ultrawide screen makes seeing more of your work at once easier, as you can easily multitask with different windows open. It has high pixel density, resulting in fantastic text clarity. It also has a dedicated sRGB mode with excellent accuracy, and you'll only need to calibrate the monitor if your work requires perfect colors. Finding thunderbolt 3 > Display port adapters that support more than 4k is difficult to say the least. And you need it, because that huge horizontal resolution actually is considered the "top half" of a 5120 x 2880 (5K) monitor. So that was kind of a surprice. 4K gear might just not support 5120x1440, even though the actual pixel count is less than a full 4K image. Again, not the monitors fault - just a general thing to consider before buying anything with this resolution. I've been looking at a Ryzen 7 3800x or Ryzen 9 3900x build off a X570 board with suitable DDR4 ram (2x16 GB 3200 Mhz?) - but I'm not sure what will "fit" the GPU. Intel vs. AMD doesn't matter. Recommendations are very welcome If you find that the screen on the LG 40WP95C-W isn't wide enough for you, there's a class of 5k monitors with a 5120x1440 resolution known as super ultrawide. The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9/G95NA S49AG95 has a massive 49-inch monitor and 32:9 aspect ratio, equivalent to placing two 27-inch, 1440p monitors side-by-side. It also has an aggressively curved screen that makes it easier to see the entire screen, as the curvature brings the edges closer to you.

Throw Your Computer In The Ocean.

It has good peak brightness and good reflection handling, and it's good to use in rooms with a few lights around, but glare from strong light sources is distracting. Like the Dell, its 34-inch screen has a 3440x1440 resolution with good text clarity, but its narrow viewing angles limit its office performance because the image washes out from the sides, which isn't ideal for sharing your screen with others. On the plus side, it has excellent image accuracy, so images are life-like without any sort of calibration. I think it's foolish to drop money on a top tier flagship card when they're due to be replaced in a matter of months. Not only will you pay out the ass for it, you'll soon realize that you could have gotten better performance from a card costing half as much not even a year later. Just seems like a poor buying decision. AMD has nothing that will compete with Nvidia top tier cards. Added the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9/G95SC S49CG95 as 'Best 5k Super Ultrawide Monitor For Multimedia' because it delivers better picture quality than the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9. Added the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9/G95SC S49CG95 as the 'Best Super Ultrawide Gaming Monitor'; added the MSI MEG 342C QD-OLED and the Corsair XENEON FLEX 45WQHD240 to Notable Mentions. The Samsung CRG9 is easily the most preposterous gaming monitor I've ever laid eyes on. It's not the sheer size of it that boggles the mind. Oh no. A diagonal of 49in and an aspect ratio of 32:9 is nothing after last year's equally large and equally wide CHG90 monitor. It's the resolution of the damn thing, which stands at a mad 5120x1440. That's the same amount of screen real estate as two normal 27in 2560x1440 monitors, which has been pretty much my dream setup since, well, forever. I like the single 4K Dell U2718Q monitor I normally have on my desk, I really do. But I'd swap it for two 1440p monitors in a heartbeat.

Still, while I'd hesitate about buying the CRG9 to use as my daily desktop monitor, its allure as a gaming screen is undeniable - at least for games that actually support it. I'll be doing a separate article on the very best games to play on stupid ultrawide screens like this in the next day or two, but as you may have gathered from that aforementioned Red Dead 2 piece, cor, what an experience. Or even What are the Top 10 affordable (best budget, best cheap, or even best expensive!!!) 5120x1440 Monitor available? Etc. You need to reconsider how you snap windows to the sides/full screen. The latter is not really usefull for most office applications, but you can (with the re-incarnated powertoys tool: https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/releases) actually divide you monitor into 3, 4 or as many parts as you like and snap to these. It was just another bump on the roadOther similar 5k monitors are available, like the Apple Pro Display XDR, a higher-end and more expensive version of this monitor designed for professional content creators. The LG UltraFine 5k is another very similar option, but it's older and harder to find, and it doesn't have as many features as the Studio Display. This picture is with an older work computer and different monitor on the top left but it gives you an idea. monitors are a set of niche monitors that aren't very common, but are still useful. A 5k resolution is a broad term referring to monitors with 5120 horizontal pixels, but they come in various shapes with different vertical resolutions. One example is a monitor with a 5120x2880 resolution, whichis ideal for macOS because the operating system is optimized for monitors with this resolution, and ithelps produce sharp text. I got tired of having two 27" monitors for work, so I treated myself a Samsung C49RG90 (49", 5120 x 1440, 120Hz AMD FreeSync 2) which is very nice - but I have now realized that finding a GPU that will be able to handle it might be a problem with an expensive solution I was also surpiced that the monitor stand is actually quite "deep". Pushed all the way up against the wall, you still have around 28 cm / 11 inches from the wall to the front of the monitor. It's a standard vesa mount, as far I can see, so you can just buy a different monitor arm if you need to get it closer to the wall / away from you.
